Kelly wanted drugs after Meyiwa murder

After losing her lover – Senzo Meyiwa – in October last year, Kelly Khumalo was in deep unbearable pain and thought drugs would help. She was dating Meyiwa at the time when he was shot and killed during an alleged robbery at her mum’s house at Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni. Many of Khumalo’s friends allegedly feared she would relapse – because she had lost her man, and his family had barred her from attending the funeral.

As a result, Khumalo nearly turned back to drugs but battled the temptation to help her cope after the death.

“It crossed my mind. I thought I needed something to numb the pain, but what surprised me was that nothing in my mind or body was craving anything.

“It also felt like I’d be postponing the recovery if I did drugs. It was important for me to remain sober, although I knew it wouldn’t be easy. It still isn’t.

“And I had my kids to consider. I’m all they have.”

She gave horrifying details of the night Meyiwa was gunned down.

“My kids were both there when Senzo was shot and killed, and I know one day they’ll ask questions.

“Christian used to ask what happened, but now he doesn’t anymore. He was very close to Senzo. In fact, after Senzo was shot, Christian was pulling his hand – I think trying to save him, in a way.

“And Thingo always says ‘Daddy, Daddy’. Everyday she looks at a photo of him in the house.

“Not so long ago, she took out her dad’s medal from the drawer and wore it around her neck. She had it on the whole day. I don’t know, but it’s like she sees him,” Kelly said.

She said after the tragedy, she went under a self-imposed house arrest.

“I stayed away from social networks. I knew I was going to be called names. And I knew I was going to be hated by people who had never even heard of me.” — DailySun/Showbiz Reporter.
