Speaking during the ceremony, Dr Kaunda said: “I feel greatly honoured and privileged to have been nominated by the Voice Magazine Achievers’ Award committee for the prestigious award.
“The people of Africa are creative and hard-working.
“They deserve every opportunity for advancement in their standard of living. And I know that we do have many worthy people for this award than my humble self.
“It is therefore with a deep sense of humility and appreciation that I accept this award in the name of the weak and vulnerable among us, those for whom we must work tirelessly in order that they achieve better living standards in this our one world,” he said.
Dr Kaunda said this in a speech read on his behalf by Zambia’s ambassador to Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg and the European Union, Grace Kabwe. The former head of state said during the struggle for justice, African freedom fighters were guided by the principle to achieve common good for all and not motivated by racism or hatred.
Dr Kaunda said at the time of Zambia’s independence, the colonial administration had continued to brutalise innocent people who were merely asking for justice, equity and fair play to prevail in their respective countries.
He said Africans should not forget that as a people of “this great continent”, there are still other challenges to confront such as poverty and under-development, illiteracy and diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and HIV and Aids.
Dr Kaunda said Africa is a continent blessed with immense natural resources and there is need, therefore, to focus attention on enhancing economic and social development.
He said Africa will not be developed by people from outside but by Africans taking the lead to liberate themselves from the malaise of poverty to attain development.
Dr Kaunda, however, said he is happy that the continent is taking meaningful steps to achieve economic and social development for its people and generations to come. — Zambia Daily Mail.
