NAIROBI. —NAIROBI. — Kenya Airways said yesterday it has suspended its direct flights between Nairobi and Malawi’s commercial hub Blantyre with immediate effect due to on-going maintenance works at the airport.
A statement from the carrier, said the direct flights remain suspended from March 17 to 29 between its Nairobi hub and Blantyre in Malawi to allow for the completion of maintenance work on Chileka Airport’s runway.
“Kenya Airways wishes to inform its passengers and the general public that it will be suspending direct flights between its Nairobi hub and Blantyre in Malawi from March 17 to 29,” the airline said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
According to the airline, all guests flying to Blantyre will be rerouted though Kamuzu International Airport in Lilongwe, Malawi.
It said the passengers booked to travel between March 16 to 29 shall be allowed free change, and full refund for fully unutilised tickets.
It said partially utilised tickets shall be refunded less sectors travelled, adding that all rebooking should be done by March 24.
Kenya Airways, one of the most successful airlines in Africa after South Africa Airways and Ethiopia Airlines, introduced direct flights to Blantyre in August last year, making it the second city in Malawi that the national carrier flies into.
The three flights a week to Blantyre, Malawi’s second largest city that doubles up as its commercial hub followed the recent granting of approvals by the Malawian government for the airline to begin operations into the city.
