adminNAIROBI. — Kenya’s National Bio-safety Authority has urged the government to reconsider the ban on genetically-modified foods prepared in the country.
Mr Wellington Wei, an executive from the NBA argued that there was no scientific proof to support the assumption that the foods were harmful to consumers.
“The cabinet task force that is within the Ministry of Public Health is yet to give their report but we are hoping that the process will be completed soon,” said Mr Wei.
Debate on whether the government should lift the ban on GMOs has divided local leaders with others claiming the foods should be allowed to feed thousands of Kenyans who are under a constant threat of starvation caused by drought and rainfall failure especially in the northern parts of the country.
The government imposed a ban on the foods arguing that it exposed consumers to cancer risks especially after long term consumption.
It however failed to prove its claims.
Some members of the public on the other hand castigated the government on its move to ban the foods as many families depended on it for survival.
In a bid to reinforce the ban, government outlawed the importation of GMOs. — CAJ News.
