adminNAIROBI. —Kenya’s Meru County government has clinched a huge market deal in exporting bananas worth millions of dollars to China in a move widely seen as huge boost to local farmers’ business. The partnership has come as welcome news to Meru banana growers who have been struggling to sell their product in an already flooded market.
Meru governor Peter Munya said exporting the fruit to China would eventually boost the country’s economy to the tune of more than KSh 9 billion.
“Returns from bananas in the entire country amount to KSh 9,4 billion,” said Munya while launching a new market in Meru Town. The newly opened facility was constructed at a cost of KSh 90 million. The region is the country’s leading producer of bananas.
The bananas would be crashed into flour before being exported to China.
Munya, meanwhile, urged farmers to upgrade their farming approaches in a bid to boost yields from their farms and increase exports to China. — CAJ News.
Kenya has in recent months been fastening its bilateral ties with the Asian country.
