by a mere three points with four games remaining.
Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town are tied on 53 points and the Soweto giants are on top by virtue of a superior goal difference.
Ian Gorowa’s Sundowns are in third place on 51 points while Kaizer Chiefs occupy the fourth position with 50 points.
Chiefs are back into contention after they won their game in hand against troubled champions SuperSport on Wednesday night.
The match also saw Zimbabwe international striker Knowledge Musona getting back to scoring ways since recovering from a shoulder injury which denied him a chance to feature for Zimbabwe in the 1-0 defeat against Mali in an Africa Cup of the Nations tie in Bamako last month.
And Amakhosi’s victory, the second in as many games, has given them a reason to believe that they can win the league.
The goal by Musona in the 2-0 victory saw him keeping pace with Bafana Bafana and Sundowns forwad Katlego Mphela in the race for the Golden Boot.
Both players are now tied on 12 goals and lead the scoring charts.
Mphela overtook Musona when he went through a dry patch before he got injured.
Mphela has bagged in crucial goals for Gorowa’s side since ending his personal strike and the last four matches will define who will walk away with the coveted award.
Interestingly, of the four title-chasing teams, third-placed Sundowns have the best goal difference, which may come to play if the league is to be decided on that.
With four rounds of matches to go, the league will definitely not be decided this weekend but will obviously take an interesting shape.
Ajax Cape Town, home to Zimbabwe international players Khama Billiart, Tafadzwa Rusike and Willard Katsande got the ball rolling last night when they played Golden Arrows at Newlands. This afternoon Sundowns’ take on Ramson Zhuwawo and Carlington Nyadombo’s Amazulu away at Moses Mabhinda Stadium in Durban.
Chiefs are home to Mpumulanga Black Aces tonight at Peter Mokaba.
The leaders Pirates will complete the programme with an away fixture to Platinum Stars tomorrow afternoon at Royal Bafokeng in Rustenburg.
In-form Ajax Cape Town midfielder Billiart did not feature in the match last night after accumulating three yellow cards.
The Urban Warriors have been the most consistent side in the league in the second half of the season and if they fail to win the title, they will look back to their 4-4 draw with Sundowns a fortnight ago.
The youthful team let slip a 4-1 lead to allow a share of spoils with the Pretoria side.
In their remaining matches, the Urban Warriors have three home matches and one away match to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs.
And yesterday Ajax Cape Town attacking midfielder Billiart, speaking from his base in the Mother City, said the Kaizer Chiefs game will be a defining tie.
“Our chances of winning the title are still high although some people are now counting us off.
“In fact I believe of all the teams, our chances are brighter because we still have three matches at home and our record has been very good.
“After we were held by Sundowns, some felt that we blew it and we cannot challenge for the league but it was just a minor setback.
“We just lost concentration and continued to attack instead of defending the four-goal lead thereby exposing ourselves. But the good thing is we are still in it.
“But winning our home matches doesn’t mean we are home and dry because we have an away match against Kaizer Chiefs.
“This match should decide whether we win the league or not. And I think the team that wins that day will have a big say in the league race,” said Billiart.
While the Urban Warriors and Orlando Pirates’ remaining fixtures seem relatively easier, it is not the same case for Amakhosi who still have two matches involving the title-chasing teams.
Chiefs would be travelling to Pretoria in the coming weeks for a date with Sundowns and that match will have a major influence on the log table.
