ZIMBABWE international winger Khama Billiat last night sealed his move to Absa Premiership giants Mamelodi Sundowns, ending months of speculation over his future after he indicated his willingness to leave Ajax Cape Town. There had been reports that Billiat’s intended switch from the Urban Warriors to the Brazilians had been called off with the player now being linked with a possible move to Orlando Pirates.
Billiat, who flew back to South Africa from Harare on Wednesday morning, however, agreed personal terms with Sundowns, paving the way for him to become former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane and the club’s latest Zimbabwean acquisition.
Ajax Cape Town and Sundowns had initially agreed terms on a club to club level but that deal was only subject to the player then agreeing personal terms. Billiat, whose management team had insisted that they would not rush the player into signing a deal without assessing what was at stake, then put talks on hold, triggering suggestions that the former Aces Youth Academy player had been left in limbo.
But The Herald can reveal that Billiat finally agreed terms with the Brazilians and was by last night just tying up the loose ends as the club prepared to unveil him to their fans and the South African media this morning.
Mosimane has always been an admirer of Billiat’s talents and had been pursuing the winger for a long time until he finally got his man last night. Earlier in the off-season break, Sundowns also signed Zimbabwean striker Cuthbert Malajila who became an instant hit when scoring on his debut for the Pretoria club.
Now Billiat, who had also tried his luck with Lokomotiv Moscow in Russia, will link up with veteran midfielder Esrom Nyandoro, former Warriors assistant coach Peter Ndlovu and Malajila as the Zimbabweans, who are currently on the Sundowns books.
