THE Senior Minister of State in the President’s Office Cde Simon Khaya Moyo yesterday visited the family of the late national hero Retired Lieutenant-Colonel Harold Chirenda in Bulawayo to console them. Rtd Lt-Col Chirenda was buried at the National Heroes Acre in Harare last Thursday.

Cde Khaya Moyo who was out of the country when Rtd Lt-Col Chirenda passed on, described the late retired army officer as a humble and a man of the people.

He told Rtd Lt-Col Chirenda’s wife, Florence, at her Paddonhurst home: “We are praying for you and the family. We know the Chirenda family is going through unbearable pain. His passing on was not only a loss to the family but to the whole nation. He was a complete war veteran and we shall forever remember him.”

Cde Khaya Moyo, who was accompanied by Minister of State for Provincial Affairs in Bulawayo, Cde Eunice Nomthandazo Moyo, said Rtd Lt-Col Chirenda was a unifier who demonstrated true unity through his entire life.

“He demonstrated how important it was to have a sense of belonging by being a patriotic Zimbabwean. Many people did not know that he was born in Harare. They thought he was born in Kezi because he did not believe in regional divisions.

“He lived by example as he could use any language and never looked down upon anyone. I believe every Zimbabwean should emulate him and follow his footsteps because that is how we build the nation,” said Cde Khaya Moyo who is also Zanu-PF national chairman.
He added: “Rtd Lt-Col Chirenda has left us a lesson of being a big disciple of the Unity Accord and we must learn from that. He was committed, dedicated and disciplined.

“I therefore would like to congratulate and commend Zanu-PF for according him a national hero status. We have no doubts that he deserved it. Wherever he is, he is convinced that he did his part not only for the family but for the nation. We therefore have to do him proud by emulating him.”

Cde Khaya Moyo urged Zimbabweans to defend the Unity Accord at all costs.
He promised that the party would help Rtd Lt-Col Chirenda’s family in every way possible.
Rtd Lt-Col Chirenda is survived by wife Florence, nine children and 18 grandchildren.
