Kidnapper found with diamonds

Thupeyo Muleya, Beitbridge Bureau
A 26-YEAR-OLD Beitbridge man who was arrested for allegedly impregnating six pupils from Vhembe and St Mary’s Secondary schools in the border town was yesterday arrested for illegal possession of diamonds.

Rayson Tsvangirai Rushwaya had been remanded in custody to today for a fast track trial on charges of kidnapping two girls.

Before his detention yesterday, Rushwaya had come to court for trial on charges of insulting a journalist over the phone.

The six carat diamonds were found hidden in the roof of his Toyota Mark X by detectives from the Border Control and Minerals Unit.

Through his lawyer Reason Mutimba of Nyikadzino, Simango and Associates, Rushwaya is denying charges of kidnapping and unlawful detention of two 17 year old girls against their parents’ will.

Beitbridge magistrate Innocent Bepura yesterday remanded Rushwaya in custody to Monday next week for trial in all cases.

Rushwaya is facing a charge of contravening the Telecommunications Act, two counts of kidnapping and one of illegal possession of precious minerals.

Prosecuting, Nomathemba Sayi told the court that in October last year, Rushwaya proposed love to one of the girls aged 17 and stayed with her as his girlfriend at a house in Dulibadzimu suburb.

The teenager’s parents tried to get her back but he was evasive until the end of November when he assaulted the girl and chased her away following an argument.

The prosecutor said in February this year, Rushwaya courted another 17 year old girl and took her to the same house against her parents’ will.

Sayi said the matter was reported to police leading to his arrest.
