A MAN was killed for blocking a street near his home, a court heard.
Emisirayi Chinyengetere, 41, of Rujeko C in Masvingo, met his death after confronting Tawanda Gondo, 28, and Lee Shumba, 22, whom he accused of trespassing.
He blocked them from passing near his house after accusing them of trespassing.
James Murambiza, prosecuting, told the Masvingo Magistrates’ Court that Gondo and Shumba beat up Chinyengetere, who was drunk, leaving him for dead. He died a day later.
Murambiza said the duo were walking along Zvita Street shortly after 3PM on Monday, February 2, when Chinyengetere blocked their way saying no-one was allowed to use the way.
Chinyengetere, who appeared drunk, stood in front of the two in a bid to stop them while brandishing a knife, the prosecutor said.
Unperturbed by the knife, the pair continued with their journey after pushing Chinyengetere away. Chinyengetere, the court heard, stabbed Gondo on the hand, drawing a violent response from the two men.
They allegedly kicked and punched him until they were restrained by a neighbour, John Hunyani.
After the assault, Chinyengetere went home but was heard groaning in pain from his room the following day at around 7AM by a neighbour, Edmore Matsikidze.
“Matsikidze went to investigate and upon his arrival he found Chinyengetere leaning against his bed while sitting on the floor.
“He asked what was wrong. Chinyengetere complained of abdominal pains. Chinyengetere also revealed that he had been assaulted by Gondo and Shumba,” the prosecutor said.
Matsikidze called the police, who by then had recorded a complaint by Gondo and Shumba who alleged that they had been stabbed by Chinyengetere.
By the time an ambulance arrived, Chinyengetere was already dead.
Masvingo provincial magistrate Langton Ndokera remanded the two in custody to February 16.
