A 52-YEAR-OLD Chegutu woman allegedly killed her granddaughter and ate part of her flesh in a chilling ritual murder.
Police confirmed the arrest of Veronica Mudzipuri, an artisanal miner, who allegedly poisoned her four-year-old granddaughter, Tawanayasha Kadhene, before mutilating her body in Shurugwi on 26 August.
In a statement, police said: “The suspect gave the victim a maheu drink laced with a maize pesticide pill. The child collapsed and died instantly. The suspect then cut flesh from the victim’s cheek, mixed it with herbs prescribed by a sangoma, cooked it and ate the mixture.”
The gruesome act has shocked the nation, with residents describing Mudzipuri’s actions as “beyond evil.”
Police said investigations so far point to ritual purposes behind the killing. “The suspect confessed to carrying out the act after consulting a traditional healer,” read the statement.
The case has once again put the spotlight on ritual murders and the dark underworld of traditional healers who prescribe macabre practices to desperate followers.
Mudzipuri is expected to appear in court soon facing murder charges. Meanwhile, police have urged communities to report suspicious practices and resist being lured into harmful rituals.
