Three drivers in Midlands province have been jailed for being involved in traffic incidents that ended in deaths.
In one case a 54-year-old bus driver from Gweru will spend three years behind bars after he was found guilty of culpable homicide for running over and killing a woman, Mercy Mukwasini, in the city’s central business district while speeding.
Albert Magara (54) of Iron Side compound in Shurugwi, also employed as a driver at Zimasco Private Limited, stood before Gweru Provincial Magistrate, Mrs Phathekhile Msipa.
Appearing before the same court was a Takura Shava of Mbizo 17 high-density suburb in Kwekwe, a commuter omnibus driver (30). He was sentenced to two and a half years after he was convicted of overloading and speeding, leading to the death of one person along the Harare-Masvingo highway near Mvuma Town on April 1.
Shava’s 18-seater Toyota Hiace was carrying 24 passengers on the day, and it burst its left rear tyre and overturned, killing one person. Six months were suspended on condition of good behaviour.
Another commuter omnibus driver, 26-year-old Rundesu Tamba, will also spend two years behind bars for culpable homicide.
Tamba of Mkoba high-density suburb in Gweru was involved in an accident that killed one person on June 1, this year when he lost control of the kombi he was driving, resulting in the vehicle veering off the road and overturning before landing on its left side.
One person died on the spot.
