IT was the end of the road for King Denara and his crew after detectives from CID Drugs swooped in on a drug-laden trailer headed for Bulawayo, uncovering a stash of 100 bottles of Broncleer cough syrup, a dangerous drug popular on the streets.
The high-stakes takedown began on 28 April, when police got a hot tip about a white Toyota Quantum towing a black trailer travelling from South Africa. Officers intercepted the vehicle at Esigodini Tollgate and found the cough syrup hidden in a MAQ SURF box and black cooler bag.
The package was marked for King Denara, leading detectives to plot a controlled delivery straight to Efusini, Tsholotsho. Sure enough, Dennis Ndlovu (26), aka King Denara, showed up to collect the parcel. He was promptly cuffed!
He didn’t go down alone. Ndlovu spilled the beans and implicated Edward Phiri (32) of Makokoba as the real owner of the illegal stash. Police also learned that the contraband was smuggled into the country by Ndlovu’s sister, Sithabile Sibanda, from South Africa.
The cough syrup haul, valued at US$1 000, is part of a growing crisis linked to substance abuse across Zimbabwe.
Inspector Nomalanga Msebele, the Bulawayo police spokesperson, praised the public’s support and urged continued vigilance:
“We urge communities to protect our youth by reporting anyone dealing in dangerous drugs. Let’s work together to stop this scourge before it destroys more lives.”
