HARARE’S comedy scene lit up this Easter weekend as King Kandoro delivered a masterclass at 7 Arts Theatre, and if there were any doubts about his throne, he crushed them in style.

Dubbed “A Very Special Show,” the night was exactly that special, electric, and unapologetically hilarious.

But before the King Kandoro, real name Mukudzei Kandoro, took centre stage, the spotlight first belonged to a rising army of comedians who proved that Zimbabwe’s stand-up scene is not just alive but it’s booming. The show opened its doors to fresh talent, giving upcoming comics a platform to warm the stage. From Mike Chipere to Munya, Patricia Putsai, Neville Farai, Tinashe Fortune and Glad Chipenzi, the line-up delivered punchline after punchline, each act digging deep into the realities of everyday Zimbabwean life.

And, of course, digging on some of local celebrities.

Their material?

Relatable, raw, and ridiculously funny.

From strict parents and school struggles to the chaos of daily survival, the comedians turned ordinary experiences into extraordinary humour.

“We just tell the truth but in a way that makes people laugh at their own lives,” one of the performers quipped backstage.

And, among them, one man stood taller than the rest.

Glad Chipenzi, representing Norton, was a revelation. With sharp satire and effortless delivery, he had the crowd hanging onto every word, his jokes hitting that sweet spot between wit and truth.

His performance didn’t just entertain but it announced his arrival.

By the time he left the stage, the message was loud and clear, the future of stand-up comedy is in good hands and the competition is heating up.

But just when the audience thought they had seen it all, the night took an unexpected twist.

Instead of Easter eggs, the crowd got a surprise gift from King Kandoro.

Enter Takura Shonhai affectionately known as Shona Prince who stormed the stage with his crowd-favourite hit “Haarore.”

What followed was chaos in the best way possible.

Ladies screamed.

Fans sang along.

The theatre transformed into a mini concert, with energy levels shooting through the roof.

For a moment, it felt less like Easter and more like Valentine’s Day.

And then the King Kandoro arrived.

Just like South African movie star Leon Schuster, “They Don’t Call Me Die Hard for Nothing  . . .”

King Kandoro, came and conquered.

He stamped authority.

Yes, when he finally stepped onto the stage, he did so with the confidence of a man who knows exactly who he is.

Dressed in a sleek black Chinese-collar suit, he exuded class, effortlessly blurring the line between comedy and high art.

This wasn’t street theatre.

This was refined, intentional and commanding.

Behind him, his accolades spoke volumes.

A two-time NAMA award winner, Kandoro didn’t shy away from owning his greatness.

“I am King,” he declared with a grin. “Even Nijo Slick-pastor has one award,” he joked, sending the audience into fits of laughter.

But beyond the humour, there was depth.

“This one, I dedicate to myself… allow me to be vulnerable,” he told the crowd before diving into a set that balanced comedy with introspection.

His Easter-themed message tied it all together.

“Your sins are forgiven,” he said, before adding a cheeky disclaimer: “If I have offended anyone, just know you and I have been forgiven.”

It was bold. It was daring. And it worked.

Kandoro’s ability to weave humour with social commentary once again proved why he sits comfortably at the top of Zimbabwe’s comedy food chain.

By the end of the night, one thing was undeniable.

This was a big statement.

A statement that stand-up comedy in Zimbabwe is evolving. That new voices are rising.

And that the King is not stepping down any time soon.
