DATES for the King Mzilikazi annual commemorations have been set for 5 and 6 September this year.
This year the event is being held over two days, with the first day (5 September) being the educational programme that will be targeted at students from primary school level to university level, promoting heritage-based education and cultural awareness.
The second day is open to the public and will feature the cultural parade march from Matshobana suburb to Bulawayo’s Large City Hall via Luveve road.
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, Secretary for Mthwakazi ka Mzilikazi Cultural Association Mr Lungisani Ndiweni revealed that this year’s theme is “Siqoqa Isizwe Ngamasiko” (We strengthen the nation through culture), which he said highlights the importance of cultural heritage in nation-building.
“Today the 6th of May 2025, is crucial as it marks exactly 120days/four months to the 6th of September 2025, which is the chosen day for the main event of the King Mzilikazi kaMatshobana Memorial commemorations,
“This day has been deliberately chosen because of its particular significance in that it marks both the official launch of this year’s event as well as the countdown to this much anticipated and much loved cultural festival,” he said.
Mr Ndiweni said on the first day, they aimed to promote cultural heritage and indigenous languages, encourage participation in traditional activities like songs and dances, foster values like Ubuntu and responsibility and encourage young girls to join Amatshitshi and young boys to join amabutho, where they will be groomed to be responsible adults.
The second day will feature traditional displays by amabutho, izintombi, amatshitshi, and arts groups, performances reflecting Zimbabwe’s rich cultural heritage.
He said the public will have an opportunity to interact with traditional leaders (Izinduna) and government officials.
He said they will be traditional foods and traditional beer.
“The expected number of guests is over 5000, we invite the Government of Zimbabwe, the National Chiefs Council, Cultural Organisations, and the general public to participate in this celebration,” said Mr Ndiweni.
The event will take place at King Mzilikazi Memorial Site ‘KoMhlahlandlela’, which is 22 kilometres out of Bulawayo along the Old Gwanda Road.
