King Shaddy’s genius of sequels

Zimdancehall chanter, King Shaddy, real name Shadreck Kwarire, might be one of the most underrated musicians in the country, but he has mastered a unique style of making sequels of his songs.

The singer rose to fame with his hit-single Letter to Mai Huni which became a fan favourite receiving widespread airplay on most local radio stations.

Mai Huni was a fictional character from ZBCtv hit soapie Studio 263. After the success of this song, King Shaddy released a sequel titled Reply ya Mai Huni.

From then on, the musician mastered the style of doing follow up songs and is undeniably one of the few Zimbabwean musicians who have mastered this skill, if he is not the only one doing it.

In 2012, he released Tsoka yaDanmore and it became an instant hit which also fared well on local charts.

Here, he sang about the infamous fictional thief and in the video, Danmore is seen stealing a mobile phone through a window.

His footsteps are recognised and the victims go after him.

As a follow up, this year, the singer who has been on a hiatus, returned with a sequel to this track titled The return of Danmore Adhubula.

In this new video, Danmore strikes again as he steals an old man’s underwear and runs away.

The song which was released together with the video in September has been trending on YouTube since its release and it has received close to 100 000 views there.

Music sequels are good as the help artistes to capture their audiences by anticipating the sequels. This keeps the artiste relevant and with a certain loyal following.
