BULAWAYO is bracing for an exciting new chapter in its road-running calendar, with Bulawayo Athletics Board (BAB) chairperson Watson Madanyika expressing optimism ahead of Saturday’s inaugural Kings Half Marathon, where a strong field of athletes is expected to headline the event.
The race, set for Busters Sports Club, is expected to bring together elite runners, recreational athletes, fitness enthusiasts and families for a day that organisers hope will leave a lasting impression on the city’s sporting landscape.
For Madanyika, the arrival of a new road-running event is an encouraging development for athletics in Bulawayo, particularly as the sport continues to provide opportunities for competition, talent identification and community participation.
“We are really looking forward to the inaugural Kings Half Marathon. It promises to be a day of excitement, bringing together athletes, fitness enthusiasts and the community.
“We are happy to see an event of this nature coming to Bulawayo, and we hope it will inspire more people to embrace athletics while giving our athletes an opportunity to showcase their talent,” said Madanyika.
The inaugural edition comes with expectations of a competitive contest, particularly in the 21,1km race, where established Zimbabwean road runners are expected to provide the main attraction.
Some of the athletes expected to take part include Olympian Isaac Mpofu, Philipa Dube, Anne Chirisa, Moses Tarakinyu, Tendai Zimuto and Mthokozisi Mhlanga, although their final participation will be determined by the confirmed start list.
The presence of experienced runners would give the race a competitive edge, with athletes expected to test themselves against familiar rivals while competing for honours in the event’s first edition.
The organisers have also put up an attractive prize purse, with the winner of the half marathon set to pocket US$1 500. The runner-up will receive US$500, while third place carries a US$250 reward.
The 10km race winner will take home US$500, with US$250 and US$150 going to the second- and third-placed finishers respectively. In the 5km category, the top three will receive US$250,
US$150 and US$100.
The different race categories are designed to widen participation, allowing competitive runners to pursue podium finishes while giving fitness enthusiasts and less experienced participants an opportunity to be part of the occasion.
The event will also extend beyond the finish line, with organisers planning aerobics, Zumba, children’s entertainment and other activities intended to create a family-friendly atmosphere.
That broader appeal aligns with the ambitions behind the race, which include promoting healthier lifestyles, youth development and sports tourism. The involvement of local businesses and sponsors is also expected to help create an event that benefits more than just the athletes on the course.
Budget Cash & Carry Wholesale and Bux Energy Drink are among the sponsors associated with the marathon, while other businesses have also been linked to the event.
The 21,1km, 10km and 5km races will start at 6am from Busters Sports Club. The approved route takes runners through parts of Bulawayo’s southern suburbs, passing landmarks that include
Hillside Teachers’ College, Ekusileni Hospital and Leeside Shops. Water stations are planned along the course.
With the inaugural race now approaching, attention will turn to the final entry numbers, the strength of the elite field and the event’s ability to deliver on its promise of an exciting day of athletics.
A successful debut would give the Kings Half Marathon a strong foundation on which to build, adding another platform for road runners while bringing the Bulawayo community together through sport.
