ZIMBABWE tennis legend Cara Black says a nagging knee injury has brought her career to a temporary halt. The 35-year-old mother of one revealed this during the Davis Cup sponsorship launch held in Harare Sports Club yesterday. “I am just a little bit at a standstill for the moment,” said Cara. “I have a big knee issue that I am trying to deal with, it’s been bothering me for the last half of this year.
“I am going back to see the doctor in Melbourne, Australia, next week and, hopefully, we can figure something out and just come up with a solution. “I’ll just have to wait and see. I am not sure what the solution will be, whether they say I need injections or whether I need surgery but, hopefully, i will keep the fingers crossed, it will be fine and I’ll be ready to play in the Australian Open (in January next year).”
Cara and her doubles partner Sania Mirza, of India, are currently ranked fourth in the world and the formidable duo have been enjoying a good run.
They won the Pan Pacific Open Championship in Tokyo in September and the BNP Paribas WTA Finals in Singapore last month.
According to Cara, the knee injury was caused by the toll the sport has taken on her body over the years.
“I think it’s just an issue of the wear and tear of the years, I mean it’s been 20 years for me playing as a professional and that, definitely, takes its toll on the body and, particularly, running and just playing on hard-courts all the time,” said Cara.
“It’s very hard on the body. It’s unfortunate because I have been doing so well but it’s something I can’t ignore. “It will go away so I have to nurse it. “I haven’t been playing much lately, just having a break, not training because I just wanted to see how my knee would be feeling and give it a rest and see how it feels after this break.”
