A COMMUTER omnibus driver crashed his vehicle into an abandoned building in Bulawayo yesterday after losing control of the kombi and ran away from the scene.
Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed the incident that occurred at about 8AM along Fife Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues.
She said the driver ran away from the scene after the accident. “The kombi driver jumped and disappeared from the scene and left the vehicle. The police attended the scene and took the vehicle to the VID,” she said.
According to witnesses, the kombi was parked along Fife Street when the driver was allegedly approached by a police officer demanding to see the vehicle registration documents.
The police officer is alleged to have gone into the vehicle and struggled with the driver to control the steering wheel.
“The driver and the police officer started fighting over the steering wheel when the police officer got into the kombi. When the driver was trying to turn the steering wheel while the car was moving, he lost control of the steering wheel and crashed into the pillar of the building,” said an eyewitness who declined to be named.
However, Insp Msebele said she could not confirm if a police officer was involved in the accident. — @natashaadam1
