A 50-YEAR-OLD kombi driver who went berserk and assaulted two police officers after they had issued him with a ticket for overloading before striking them with a pair of handcuffs, was yesterday fined $300 or three months in jail. Jonathan Nkomo of House Number 3640 Emganwini in Bulawayo pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault but was convicted by Western Commonage magistrate, Mr Themba Chimiso.
The prosecutor, Mrs Charity Nyathi, said on 29 June at about 10am, Assistant Inspector Nyengedzerai Masuku of ZRP Bulawayo Traffic section was manning a roadblock with Sergeant James Tauya Muperi and Constable Munjeri along Khami Road when they stopped Nkomo, who was driving a Toyota Hiace.
On inspecting the vehicle, Asst Insp Masuku discovered that the vehicle was overloaded. She then ordered Nkomo to pay a fine of $10 for the offence.The court was told that Nkomo became violent during which he pushed Asst Insp Masuku before striking her with an unknown object.
He then grabbed Const Munjeri’s pair of handcuffs as he was trying to arrest him and struck Asst Insp Masuku on the face. He also struck Sgt Muperi in between his legs resulting in his uniform trousers getting torn. Const Munjeri managed to arrest Nkomo.
