Kombi operator appeals for help

Herald Reporter
THE owner of a Kombi that killed 22 passengers near Bubi along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway in July yesterday said the driver had no documents required for one to drive a public service vehicle. Mr Elson Muneri said his insurers refused to foot hospital bills for the survivors of the accident because the kombi driver did not have a defensive driver’s licence, had not been re-tested and had no medical fitness certificate.
Mr Muneri is appealing to well-wishers to help him foot hospital bills.

“I had insured passengers (insurance company witheld) but when they realised that my driver did not have a defensive driver’s certificate, a medical certificate and a re-test, they could not give me any assistance,” he said.

Mr Muneri said he had no other source of income because the kombi was a write-off after the accident.
“I am kindly asking the nation, churches, companies and any well-wishers to assist the injured persons. Of the eight injured, two are still admitted in United Bulawayo Hospital while the other six were discharged and are still on treatment.”

“I only had one kombi and so after the accident I was left with no other source of income,” he said. The tragedy happened on July 28 when the kombi, which was on its way from Masvingo to Musina, was involved in a head-on collision with a South African registered Hino truck.
