Komphela linked to Bucs

SPECULATIONS continued yesterday over the possibility of former Bafana Bafana captain and coach Steve Komphela joining Orlando Pirates.
Pirates coach Roger de Sa has been under siege since the Bucs’ 2-1 Telkom Knockout final defeat to Platinum Stars on                               Saturday night – their third cup final defeat in a row.

That loss has thrown the beleaguered mentor’s job under intense scrutiny.
Komphela has been without a job since he was fired by Free State Stars two weeks ago. He could not be reached for comment about the rumours yesterday.

Also linked to the job at Pirates is Ruud Krol, who resigned from his position at CS Sfaxien after winning the Caf Confederation Cup with the Tunisian side two weeks ago. Krol used to coach Pirates and won the treble with them in 2011.

De Sa, however, has repeatedly made it clear that he has a contract with the Buccaneers for another 18 months.
Pirates communications manager Mickey Modisane yesterday denied that Komphela was coming to Parktown.

“We have a coach in Roger, the rumour about Steve joining our technical staff is not true. If there is a change in the technical staff, chairman Dr Irvin Khoza will make an announcement.

“There is also a rumour about Ruud coming back, which is also not true. We understand our supporters are unhappy with the latest developments, especially after the defeat in Mbombela.”

Pirates are left with three matches to complete the year. They play Dikwena in Phokeng on Monday, AmaTuks (December 19) and Lamontville Golden Arrows (December 22).-Sowetan.
