Kumalo Hockey Stadium play host to inter-provincial tourney

THE Matabeleland Hockey Board (MHB) will host the annual inter-provincial senior men and women’s tournament at Kumalo Hockey Stadium this weekend. MHB public relations officer Loveness Chirwa said 14 teams had confirmed participation at the two-day tournament that would be played on a roundrobin basis.

Harare, Masvingo and Matabeleland have fielded both men’s and women’s teams while Midlands would only be represented by a men’s side.

Matabeleland are the holders of both the men and women’s titles, and Chirwa said they would go all out to defend their crowns.

“The Matabeleland teams are practising for the tournament to ensure the titles remain in the province. We have retained most of the players who were part of the 2014 squads and that should play to our advantage as their experience should see us through,” said Chirwa.

She appealed to the public to support hockey by attending the competition in large numbers as entrance is free, saying a good crowd would spur the players.

Masvingo women’s team captain Audrey Mangwende said her side had prepared hard for the event and they were ready to wrest the crown away from Matabeleland.

“We have done everything we can in terms of preparations and are now just waiting for the tournament to kick off. We’re confident of victory,” said Mangwende.
