Kwaito group tackles water crisis

This was revealed during the Blue Monday Pre-Launch Campaign held at the council chambers yesterday. The official launch will be on Monday 1 October.

The trio is made up of Donald “Donara” Nyoni, Francis “Fra” Tsuro and Elton Chiwaka.

The group was last month endorsed as Goodwill Ambassadors together with Highlanders Football Club, reigning Miss Zimbabwe Bongani Dhlakama, Bantu Rovers founder Methembe Ndlovu and the mayor Thaba Moyo.

In an interview yesterday, the vice president of the group’s recording studio, Amavulindlela Ultimate Records, Shepherd Dube said they wanted to use the group’s fame to do good for the city.

He said apart from the kwaito track there was a Jazz track for the mature also to raise awareness on the importance of conserving water.

“We would like to thank the city council for choosing us to be the ambassadors of the city. The kwaito track is geared towards the youth and how it is important to involve the youth in such matters.

“We have recorded two tracks on water conservation. The other one is a jazz track by Pro and Afro Culture that will be for the older generation,” said Dube.

He said there was a gospel tune that would be released next week, being worked on by one their groups to raise awareness in churches.

“Afro Refresh Gospel another group in our stable is working on a gospel track that we shall take to the churches. There was a need to take the ‘gospel’ of water conservation to the churches so we decided to have a gospel track,” said Dube.
During the meeting that had the city’s councillors, the town clerk, Middleton Nyoni said it was encouraging to see young groups taking water conservation seriously.

He said this was because issues of water concerned their future. “It is good to see young generation taking such issues seriously. This is because issues such as water directly affect their future,” said Nyoni.

The Goodwill Ambassadors will join the council in carrying out campaigns in schools where on the first Monday of every month, the teams will do an outreach to make interesting and educative presentations on water conservation.

The Bulawayo City Council last month dubbed the first Monday of every month “Blue Monday” and called on residents to wear sky blue clothing on the day and participate in fund-raising for the completion of duplication of the Insiza Dam pipeline.

New Kid on the block Star FM have also been roped in with a programme called Masiyephambili Drive, where the Blue Monday awareness campaign will be done.

Masiyephambili Drive would highlight health and social issues in Bulawayo.

The day would also be used by the city’s information dissemination and public education sub-committee, a part of the city’s water crisis committee, to step up campaigns to make every resident a part of the water problem solution.
