GEMS captain Felisitus Kwangwa has welcomed the resumption of sport and says they can’t wait to be back on the court.
There hasn’t been much activity for netball since last year.
Kwangwa said with the 2023 World Cup qualifiers expected to take place next year, it was important they start to compete now.
“It means a lot, it means our lives are back to normal because close to two years, with no competition because of Covid-19, it was difficult, especially for those who relied on winning bonuses.
“But, we have our fingers crossed that something happens soon,or before October, because everyone cannot wait to be back on the court.
“I think considering the green light that sport was given, the national association has something in store for us.
“If we start now, we are talking of talented people who are already playing and we are not starting from scratch, although we had disturbances,” said Kwangwa.
She is positive the blending of senior and upcoming players will create the needed competition as everyone fights for her place.
“I believe from the players that I have met since I came back, most have not gained weight, we know shedding weight is difficult, so that will not be a problem,’’ she said.
“I believe we have got a lot of youngsters who are trying to fit in.
“If you look at England, they have a young team and with what I know, the youngsters will be more useful.
“Remember, there are a number of those who retired, so I think there will be more competition.
“Everyone is aware of what happened at the World Cup and that, on its own, is something to motivate them, so it’s likely to be tough competition.
“I am very confident we are going to make it for the 2023 World Cup.’’
Kwangwa returned home a few months ago following the expiry of her contract with Vitality Netball Supexrleague side Surrey Storm, at the end of the 2021 season in June.
She is looking forward to making a comeback at Correctional Queens and help the side maintain their dominance on the local scene.
“For now, the plan is to play for Correctional Queens but if anything comes up, that will be good for me.
“I have not forgotten what I learnt.
“I think it will be an added advantage to my team because we will have a different approach to the game,’’ said Kwangwa.
