Kwekwe City Council is planning to enact a by-law that will compel mining companies operating in the city to periodically maintain local roads, mayor council Angeline Kasipo has said.
Speaking during an all stakeholders meeting at a local hotel on Monday, Clr Kasipo said most of the roads in the city were in a very bad state due to heavy duty trucks belonging to local mining companies. She said trucks from Zimasco, Africa Chrome Fields and Portnex that were criss-crossing the city carrying raw materials should play a role in maintaining the roads.
“We have so many challenges that we are faced with as a local authority, especially those to do with our road,” said Clr Kasipo. “In this meeting we want all stakeholders to give us an input on what steps we can take to help develop our city. “Our roads are in a sorry state due to heavy duty trucks that frequent them carrying ores. We thus need to have such companies like Zimasco, Chrome Fields Mining and Portnex playing a role in the maintenance of our road infrastructure.” Clr Kasipo said there was a lot of activity in Kwekwe City with trucks coming in and out with raw materials, hence the need for the roads to be maintained regularly.
“This is a challenge for all of us so we want to try and see if we can come up with by-laws that compel these companies to help in maintaining our roads,” he said.
“We have come up with some suggestions but we need every one to submit their input so that we can build a better city together,” she said. Clr Kasipo said Kwekwe City Council also has problems with illegal gold panners who were vandalising water and sewer pipes in search of water.
“We also have a problem with gold panners who continue to vandalise our water pipes so that they access water for their panning activities,” he said.
