The Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit (CPU) has donated an assortment of goods to victims of Cyclone Idai.
The CPU team mobilised donations from the Kwekwe community as well as business and handed them over to the Provincial Civil Protection Unit where the goods will be accounted for before being taken to the victims.
The goods, including blankets, clothes, foodstuffs, toiletries and cooking utensils, among others, were dispatched aboard a Zimbabwe National Army 30-tonne truck to Gweru.
Kwekwe CPU chair Mr Fortune Mpungu, who is also Kwekwe district administrator, applauded members of the public for the gesture.
“The response from the communities has been overwhelming,” he said. “People from all walks of life including the business community, Government departments, farmers, miners, councils, schools, colleges, Zanu-PF party and members of the press donated generously.
“I want to thank the Kwekwe community for responding overwhelmingly to the call to assist others. We set up drop-in centres in schools, local authorities, churches and other places where people where dropping in their donations.”
Besides the goods, Mr Mpungu said they had received about $2 000 in cash.
Mr Mpungu said more donations were still coming through and another truckload could soon be dispatched.
He said school pupils had donated stationery towards their peers whose books was washed away in the cyclone.
He said a musical show had also been lined up in the town where Kwekwe artistes will play for charity.
“Kwekwe artistes came up with the idea of a musical show to be held this Saturday at Mbizo Stadium,” he said. “All the proceeds will be channelled towards the people who were affected by the cyclone. We are elated that these people were not directly affected but they understand the plight of their friends, relatives and fellow countrymen.”
Some of the artistes expected to perform on the day include Bantuman, Terry and the Bliss, Kayamaan, Tonde and Mopane.
