Two men from Kwekwe have been sentenced to a combined one year and eight months in jail by the Kwekwe Magistrates Court for stealing US$1 040 from a shop in August.

According to a statement issued by the National Prosecuting Authority, Tawanda Murau (34) and Todd Nyamupaguma will serve eight months and one year, respectively.

Murau was initially sentenced to 12 months in prison, before four months were suspended for good behaviour, while Nyamupaguma was initially sentenced to 15 months before three months were suspended for good behaviour.

The court heard that on August 19, the two entered a shop pretending to be customers intenting to buy headphones.

Nyamupaguma placed his bag and jacket on the counter to obscure the complainant’s view, while Murau reached behind the counter and stole the money.

He then handed it to Nyamupaguma.

The shopkeeper noticed the suspicious activity and Nyamupaguma started fleeing. He immediately checked the counter and discovered the cash was missing.

He apprehended Murau and called the police, leading to his arrest.

Nyamupaguma was arrested the following day in Kadoma, but nothing was recovered.
