KWEKWE High School will host the inaugural JR Mawere Schools Individual Chess Tournament to be held this weekend.

The tournament is in honour of the late former Kwekwe mayor and town clerk, Johnson Rex Mawere.

The tournament will be graced by students from both private and government schools with some having already confirmed their availability for the weekend tournament.

Tournament organiser, Lawrence Tavagwisa said they are looking forward to a successful tournament that will be yearly.

“We are grateful to be holding the inaugural JR Mawere Invitational Schools chess tournament at Kwekwe High over this weekend. “The tournament will be held in honour of the late Kwekwe mayor and town clerk who was an ardent chess follower.

The tournament is targeting juniors from the age of eight up to 20 years. Registration is open and we are looking forward to a competitive tournament.

“The idea is to promote the sport and also remember an icon who was willing to give back to the community so registration is free and will close on Wednesday (today). There will be a lot of prizes to be won with gold, silver, and bronze for the top three finishers in each category, both for boys and girls. “All podium finishers will get certificates with their positions while the rest of the participants will be awarded certificates of participation,” said Tavagwisa.
