KWEKWE district is the Midlands Province’s agricultural hub and comes top in terms of maize tonnage per hectare every year, provincial Agritex and livestock officer Mrs Madeliner Magwenzi has said. President Mnangagwa is one of the successful farmers in Kwekwe district.
This year’s national field day would be held at his Pricabe Farm in Sherwood Block next week.
Mrs Magwenzi said the province was banking on Kwekwe district in terms of maize produce.
She said this year’s national field day would be at President Mnangagwa’s farm in Kwekwe and his crop promises to be one of the best in the province again this year.
“As always, Kwekwe district is our cash cow in terms of the maize tonnage that we take to the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) as the province. It is the district with one of the best soils especially for maize and the tonnage per hectare is always high,” she said.
Mrs Magwenzi said during the 2016-17 farming season, Kwekwe had one of the best tonnage.
“While other districts would give us between five and seven tonnes per hectare, in Kwekwe district, we would get between 10 to 11 tonnes per hectare and it was one of the best districts nationally,” she said.
Mrs Magwenzi said her office had completed the crop assessment in the province and were compiling a report.
She said Kwekwe district remained the province’s hope.
“In terms of irrigation, the most irrigation infrastructure is found in Kwekwe district so it is always the province’s major contributor of agricultural produce,” she said.
Mrs Mangwenzi said her office plans to conduct the provincial field day at the President’s farm.
“We are still liaising and if it goes according to our plans, we would have this year’s field day for the province in Kwekwe district and most probably at the President’s farm,” she said.
President Mnangagwa is a passionate farmer. He visits his farm frequently despite his busy schedule.
