Kwekwe United marching towards unwanted record

WHAT is almost certain now is that Kwekwe United will be relegated at the end of the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign.

Another possibility is that the beleaguered Midlands side could also break a seven-year record held by Bantu Rovers, who were relegated at the end of the 2017 season.

The Bulawayo side finished bottom with a paltry 16 points.

But, they conceded a whopping 73 goals in 34 matches, the most conceded by a club in a season since 2017, when the PSL added two more clubs to make the division an 18-team competition.

That unwanted record has stood for seven years now, although it is now at risk of being broken. Kwekwe United are gradually moving towards breaking that record.

Masimba Dinyero’s side have conceded 52 goals in 25 matches.

They are 21 goals short of matching Bantu Rovers, with nine rounds left in the 2025 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign.

Kwekwe United have registered nine points in 25 matches and are heavily tipped to fall by a huge margin when they face log leaders and defending champions Simba Bhora at Wadzanai today. With just nine points after 25 Match Days, Kwekwe United also risk finishing the season  with the least number of points since 2017 when Bantu Rovers managed a total of 16.

“We have been working on our defence but it’s a tall order because we have a skeleton squad at the moment. “We have a total of 24 players including three goalkeepers.

“Of those 24, four are out injured while the other one Musukutwa is suspended,” a worried Dinyero said.

Kwekwe United have a single win in 25 matches and can now only finish the season on 36 points, should they win their remaining nine matches.
