FRESH from the critical acclaim of their debut compilation Sound of the City, released last year, the Kwela Initiative has announced a new search for the next generation of Hip Hop talent from Bulawayo.

The organisation is inviting young rappers, vocalists and producers to apply for its five day Artiste Development Programme, which will culminate in the recording of a full length collaborative album featuring all selected participants.

The programme is open to ambitious creatives aged between 18 and 25 who are based in the City of Kings and are serious about developing both their craft and their understanding of the music industry.

Successful applicants will begin their journey with an intensive development workshop carefully structured to sharpen not only artistic ability, but also professional readiness.

According to the organisers, the curriculum will cover key industry fundamentals, including studio etiquette, music distribution strategies, live performance techniques, marketing, media and public relations engagement, business skills, corporate and promoter relations, as well as pathways for regional and international growth. The workshops will be conducted in partnership with the National Gallery of

Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, strengthening the initiative’s focus on structured artistic development.
Following the training phase, participants will move directly into studio production, working collaboratively to create original material for a new Kwela Initiative album. The process will conclude with a live performance event, where the artistes will debut their collective work during a dedicated album showcase, offering audiences a first glimpse of the city’s emerging voices.

The Kwela Initiative is co-curated by respected Zimbabwean Hip Hop artiste Asaph Afrika and acclaimed producer Leemzy Beatz, whose vision centres on building meaningful, sustainable growth within Bulawayo’s Hip Hop community. Reflecting on the impact of the first edition, Leemzy Beatz described the programme as a necessary and timely response to gaps within the local music ecosystem.

“The first edition of the Kwela Initiative was created to address a real need in Bulawayo’s Hip Hop space. It brought together emerging artistes who needed more than encouragement. They needed structure, guidance and space to grow without pressure. The programme was about doing the work,” he said.

He said that participants engaged in practical, hands on sessions focusing on songwriting, music production, performance techniques and a foundational understanding of how the industry operates.

“It wasn’t about chasing perfection. It was about building discipline, confidence and creative habits. For many, it was the first time their art was treated with seriousness.”

Beyond technical skills, the initiative encouraged broader reflection.

“The programme pushed artistes to think beyond themselves. Conversations around community, identity and responsibility were central, positioning Hip Hop not just as entertainment, but as a tool for expression and connection,” said Leemzy.

As the initiative returns for its second year, Leemzy said the team is eager to engage new challenges and discover fresh talent emerging from the city. The success of Sound of the City, has set a strong benchmark. The 12 track album, widely regarded as a landmark project, was the outcome of the inaugural Kwela Rekording Kamp, a three day intensive studio session held earlier in 2025.

That recording camp itself grew out of critical discussions sparked by the Hip Hop vs the Community Indaba and the original Kwela Initiative Workshop, both of which examined Hip Hop’s potential as a vehicle for conflict transformation and positive social change.

17 of Bulawayo’s most promising emerging artistes translated those dialogues into music on Sound of the City, offering a powerful reflection of the city’s struggles, hopes and resilience. Contributors included Swazy, Stones Moyo, Fuel The Don, Curtis Dee Rovar, Nsizwa Black, TBK, Farai, Brintz, Ghawdzilla, Israel, CMK, Mike the Future, Salem Bhebhe, KidThrill, Philo Cliff, Canvus Ports and RyZoN.

With applications now open for the next edition, aspiring young artistes are being invited to become part of a growing legacy that continues to shape and redefine Bulawayo’s Hip Hop narrative.
