“The President personally asked me what was wrong at Highlanders and asked if there was no one who could rescue the club because history will judge us harshly if we don’t do that,” said Mhlanga.
He said the President, who is also the Head of State and Government and Commander-in-Chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, spoke when he was guest of honour at the club patron Taffi Moyo’s 100th
birthday celebrations in 2007, a few years after Highlanders had literally dominated the local football landscape with four titles on the trot.
Mhlanga then told the players to play football to win instead of embarrassing its followers with shoddy performances.
Highlanders will hold their elections for chairman, secretary and committee member in early February next year.
In his speech, club chairman Themba Ndlela said his executive would not fail to do its work because of events that are on the club’s calendar.
“We are not going to stop working for Highlanders because there are events in our systems, elections are just but an event but Highlanders has to function.
“We are not called Siyinqaba for nothing, it’s because indeed we are big, history has been made today Baba Mpofu,” said Ndlela.
