THE Zimbabwe senior women’s cricket team, the Lady Chevrons, are set to begin their campaign for a spot in next year’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. They will face a tricky encounter against Namibia in the Africa Qualifier in Windhoek tomorrow.
Despite being considered favourites in a group that includes Nigeria and Sierra Leone, head coach Walter Chawaguta has warned his side against complacency.
The regional qualifier offers a ticket to the global qualifier in Nepal next year, which serves as the direct path to the global showcase in England and Wales. Chawaguta emphasised the importance of remaining humble.
“It’s important for us to stay humble and grounded. We cannot afford to underestimate any opposition because in tournament cricket, one bad day can undo all your hard work,” he stated.
Chawaguta said that the team is ready for the challenge.

“We have worked hard on all aspects of our game . . . The squad has a good balance of experience and youth, and we believe we are in a strong position to compete.”
The team, led by veteran Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano, will be without regular captain Mary-Anne Musonda.

They also face a significant setback with teenage all-rounder Kelis Ndhlovu being banned from bowling for an illegal action.
The 19-year-old, who is the team’s fourth all-time leading wicket-taker, will now compete as a batter only.
Following their match against Namibia tomorrow, the Lady Chevrons will face Sierra Leone on Monday before concluding their group stage against Nigeria on September 3.
