THE Lady Chevrons will make history today when they play their first official one-day match since being granted ODI status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) in April.
The Zimbabwe women’s national team will play Ireland in the first of four ODIs at Harare Sports Club.
Lady Chevrons captain Mary-Anne Musonda said the team was charged up ahead of the historic series.
“I am really happy and excited about tomorrow (today) and playing Ireland in what will be our first match since getting ODI status. We are very excited about that. Everyone in the team will go down into the history books tomorrow. So, we want to play our best cricket and enjoy the moment because this is a moment that we will cherish for years to come.
“The preparations have been good. We have been in camp for a couple of days and are carrying the momentum we had in the Botswana tournament into this series,” said Musonda.
No spectators will be allowed at Harare Sports Club, but fans can follow the action on the Zimbabwe Cricket YouTube channel.
The tour precedes the ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Global Qualifier that will be held in Zimbabwe next month, and this represents an opportunity for the two sides to fine tune certain aspects of their game ahead of the tournament.
The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier will run from November 21 to December 5 in Harare. They were postponed last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The 10-team tournament, whose schedule will be announced in due course, decides three qualifiers for the 2022 ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup to be held in New Zealand from March 4 to April 3 next year, joining five teams which have already qualified through the ICC Women’s Championship, Australia, England, India, South Africa and New Zealand.
