Lady Chevrons suffer defeat

ZIMBABWE senior women’s national cricket team put up a poor show with the bat as they suffered a five wicket defeat in the second T20I against Thailand yesterday at Terdthai Cricket Ground in Bangkok.

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Lady Chevrons finished on 103/9 in 20 overs before the hosts went on to score 106/5 in 19.3 overs to level the four-match series.

Zimbabwean batters once again struggled at the crease as Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano top scored with 37 runs off 34 deliveries. Sharne Mayers, the Player of the Match in the first T20I fell for 29 runs after facing 42 balls, with her and Mugeri-Tiripano the only ones to achieve double figures. The team’s third leading run getter was the skipper, Mary-Anne Musonda with eight runs.

Player of the Match Nattaya Boochatham starred with the ball for the hosts, picking up 3/7 in her four over spell while Thipatcha Putthawong took two scalps for 28 runs in four overs as well.

The other wickets were taken by Chanida Sutthiruang, Onnicha Kamchomphu, and Sornnarin Tippoch who had one scalp each.

The Lady Chevrons bowlers could not defend the low score that the batters had set up. Audrey Mazvishaya finished with the best bowling figures for Zimbabwe, taking two wickets for 27 runs in 3.3 overs while Josephine Nkomo, Precious Marange and Kelis Ndhlovu took one scalp each.

Nannapat Koncharoenkai top scored for Thailand with an unbeaten 39 runs from 50 balls while Boochatham fell for 18 runs after facing 12 balls to guide the home side to victory. Skipper Naruemol Chaiwai contributed 29 runs for the home side off 41 balls.

The third T20I is scheduled to take place today at the same venue and the Gary Brent-coached Lady Chevrons will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways and take a 2-1 lead in the series. — @brandon_malvin
