Lady D goes back to basics

THE first lady of comedy in Bulawayo, Lady D (real name Nomsa Muleya), has taken a break from the scene to tone down her set after fans complained that her act was too raw and “pregnant with sexual undertones”. Lady D was last seen on stage last month at Horizon Pub and Grill. She has since then been a notable absentee at various comedy shows held in the city.

“Comedy fans say they find it unwomanly for me to talk so explicitly and boldly about sexual intercourse. Because of this, I took a break from the scene to come up with a new set that is toned down and one that will be socially correct,” she said.

The comedian said she found it surprising that her male counterparts could speak freely about their sexual escapades without anyone condemning them.

“I’ve been labelled a whore or a woman of loose morals for what I say on stage. The same society applauds my male counterparts when they crack jokes about their sexcapades.

“It’s surprising that we’ve such a misconception in society in this day and age. Society is still of the view that women can’t speak or say the same things as men,” she said.

Lady D urged comedy lovers to look at comedy as a form of social commentary because whatever they say on stage as artistes is a reflection of society.

“Comedy is about observations in society that we turn into jokes. After a show, people should ask each other what lessons they have learnt. That’s why my set is comprised of what women discuss privately among themselves, I only make it public,” she said.
Lady D said apart from toning down her set, she would be going for lessons in theatre to improve her act.

“I struggle to connect with crowds in bars as I’ve experienced two disappointing shows at Horizon Pub and Grill. I have called on the services of theatre gurus, Styx Mhlanga and Memory Kumbota who will train me on how to deliver jokes on stage so that I can capture the crowd,” she said.
