Lake Harvest on maiden win

Ellina Mhlanga Sports Reporter
LAKE Harvest coach Ralph Kawondera says his team need consistency now that they appear to have finally settled in the Northern Region Division One League after they powered to their first win of the season against Seven Flames. The fish farmers lost their two matches against Gunners and Black Rhinos.

They then settled for a draw against ZRP FC before collecting a full set of points on Friday when they dismissed Seven Flames 3-0.

A brace by Keith Mavhunga and a goal from Philip Nelson inspired them to victory.

Kawondera said his side was improving by each passing game and their victory was a sign of good days to come.

“What I can say is the first two games we were starting the season,” said Kawondera.

“When we played ZRP FC we drew but the guys showed a lot of improvement and we could have won that match.

“I think it’s part of football to have a bad start but with the way they were playing I knew a win was coming.

“For us, scoring three goals, shows we have improved and we outclassed them. I was very happy with the performance of the guys. “I think we have to be consistent now. We are on a rebuilding exercise, we have a lot of youngsters from the previous team from last year.

“Most of the guys were registered last year but were not playing.”

Lake Harvest were relegated from the Northern Region Division One Soccer League last year but got another chance to compete in the league when they were invited back after some clubs failed to meet the requirements.

And Kawondera said they need to work hard to avoid relegation this season.

“My target for this year is that we just need to fight relegation and finish among the top eight,” said Kawondera.

“We will achieve that as long as the guys maintain the fighting spirit they have.

“We have told them that we don’t need to be in the same situation as last year and they have been working hard at training.”

Lake Harvest clash against DC Academy at Nyamhunga tomorrow and Kawondera said they know what to expect.

“I have seen DC Academy, they have a young team and play the passing game just like us but we are preparing for them,” Kawondera said.

While Lake Harvest is improving, Seven Flames seem to be losing the momentum having managed a win and two draws in the first three matches of the season.

The army side were invited back to the league, after being relegated last season, and — after their huge loss against Lake Harvest — they badly need to bounce back.
