ZIMBABWE’s land reform programme is irreversible and any political party that seeks to undo the gains of the historic achievement risks alienating itself from voters, United African National Congress (UANC) president Mr Gwinyai Muzorewa has said.

Mr Muzorewa is one of the 11 politicians who threw their names in the hat to contest the Presidential election. He believes his party has a fair chance of causing an upset in the August 23 polls.

Sharing his views in an interview with The Sunday Mail, Mr Muzorewa said any party in the country’s political arena harbouring interests to reverse the land reform is an enemy of the people of Zimbabwe.

“So, our position on land reform is, this cannot be reversed. Any political party that threatens to reverse land reform is not really meeting the needs of the Zimbabwean people,” Mr Muzorewa said.

“Our position on land reform is clear; we believe, because Zimbabwe is the only country that God gave us, Zimbabweans should have the land exclusively to themselves, without the risk of the State repossessing it.”

Mr Muzorewa said he believes if there is political violence and bickering ahead of the polls, an inclusive Government should be formed by all participating parties through a negotiated settlement.

He said his party has a fair chance of winning the polls as the majority of the older generation identify with achievements it made in the two years it was in Government before independence.

“The UANC built houses for many couples in Bulawayo, Harare and other towns and cities. So, we are a results-oriented party. Developments that were made just before independence cannot be matched,” he said.

UANC fielded only two candidates for the National Assembly, Mr Nyathi Bekezela (Bubi) and Mr Peter Masanga (Murehwa North).
