MR SMART CHIMATULA, a proud beneficiary of Zimbabwe’s Land Reform Programme, stands as an inspirational figure in Goromonzi district, Mashonaland East province.
His journey is not merely one of personal triumph, but a powerful narrative that underscores the transformative impact of land reform in empowering individuals and families through agriculture.
Since taking ownership of Secuta Farm in 2007, Mr Chimatula has dedicated himself to nurturing the land, turning it into a thriving agricultural enterprise. With 271 hectares (ha) at his disposal, he has cultivated a rich variety of crops, including maize and soya beans. At the same time, he has committed 20ha to wheat production.
This crop diversification is a testament to his understanding of agricultural practices and market demands, showcasing how land reform can provide the resource necessary for families to achieve self-sufficiency and financial prosperity. Reflecting on his journey, Mr Chimatula narrated how the Land Reform Programme has transformed his life.
“The programme gave me the opportunity to own my piece of land, which I have turned into a source of wealth for my family,” he said.
“Before this, I had limited options to support my family, but now I can provide for my nine children, four of whom are currently pursuing their degree programmes at various universities.
“This opportunity has not only changed my life; it also opened doors for my children, allowing them to aspire for greater heights through education.”
With proceeds from his farm, Mr Chimatula has acquired farming equipment and trucks, built houses for himself and his employees, and sent his children to top schools.
His commitment to education illustrates the profound impact that successful farming can have on future generations. Mr Chimatula believes empowering his children through education is integral to breaking the cycle of poverty.
“When I see my children studying hard and aiming for their degrees, I know that my efforts in farming are worthwhile,” he said.
“With a solid education, they can pursue careers that will further uplift our family and contribute to our community.”
In addition to crop production, Mr Chimatula has ventured into livestock farming, raising 410 cattle of various breeds, including Thuli, Brahman and Limousin. This aspect of farming plays a crucial role in meeting his family’s needs.
“Through my farming efforts, I have been able to accumulate wealth that supports my children’s education,” he said. “I have the ability to sell even 400 beasts at once to fund my operations and ensure that my family is well taken care of.”
Mr Chimatula’s success has not come without challenges.
Upon arriving at the farm, he faced the daunting task of clearing the land and coming up with productive agricultural practices.
“I started from scratch, but I knew that with hard work and dedication, I could make this land fruitful. Every seed I planted was a step towards a better future for my family,” he said.
His perseverance and determination have borne fruit, allowing him to cultivate a farm that not only sustains his family, but also contributes to the local economy.
Looking to the future, Mr Chimatula is filled with optimism as he prepares to work alongside his son, who has just graduated from the Gwebi College of Agriculture.
“This time, I will have a manager, who is my son. We will sit down together to discuss his responsibilities and salary,” he said. “I want to ensure that he applies the knowledge he has gained from college to run the farm efficiently.
“This partnership will not only enhance productivity, but also instil a strong work ethic in him, preparing him to continue our family legacy.”
His vision for the future extends beyond mere profit.
Mr Chimatula is committed to creating a sustainable farming model that can be passed down through generations.
He emphasises the importance of mentorship and knowledge transfer.
“I want my son to understand that farming is not just a job; it’s a way of life that requires passion and dedication,” he said.
“I hope to teach him the values of hard work and respect for the land, ensuring that he carries forward our family’s agricultural heritage.”
Mr Chimatula’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the myriad benefits of land reform. It illustrates how access to land can empower individuals to build better lives for themselves and their families. His success is a reflection of the potential that exists when people are given the resources and opportunities to thrive.
“I am grateful for the Land Reform Programme,” he concluded. “It has changed my life and the lives of my children. With determination and the right support, anything is possible.”
