THE John Landa Nkomo Memorial Trust which seeks to champion developmental projects that were spearheaded by the late Vice President will be launched on Friday in Bulawayo.
The Senior Minister of State in the President’s Office Cde Simon Khaya Moyo, who has been appointed the trust’s patron, will be the guest of honour at the function that would be preceded by a meeting of board members who will be introduced to the public on the same day.
In a statement, Cde Khaya Moyo said the launch of the trust at Holiday Inn at 1900, would be combined with a fundraising dinner to raise funds for various developmental projects that were initiated and envisaged by the late Vice President who passed away in January last year.
“Some of the major objectives of the memorial trust are: to propagate the legacy of the late Vice President, Dr J L Nkomo; to assist with fundraising for various outstanding and planned projects and to facilitate the virtues of national healing, tolerance and peace activities as well as other charity causes as determined by the board of trustees,” said Cde Khaya Moyo.
“The most critical and urgent requirement out of the projects started by the late Vice President is the completion of the school projects which include teachers’ houses, the domestic science block, boys and girls hostels, the dining hall and three more classroom blocks.”
He said as part of the fund raising events, a golf tournament will be held at Harry Allen Golf Club along Gwanda Road, Bulawayo on Saturday.
Cde Nkomo’s passion for education saw him initiating the construction of a school in Tsholotsho which was named after him.
Following his death, the school has been facing financial challenges that may become a thing of the past after the trust’s launch.
