RENOWNED black empowerment activist Sonny Kuzomunhu Chasi, who is languishing in remand prison for alleged murder and rape charges, is being sued by his landlord for failing to pay more than $1 000 rent. Chasi (72), of Number 37 Sturton Drive, Glenvale in Richmond was re-arrested last November when he, on his release after serving a seven-year jail term for fraud, allegedly killed his pregnant wife, Dorcas Majola (41).
He has since his arrest not paid rent prompting his
landlord, Dr R Hill to approach the Civil Court in Bulawayo seeking an order for his eviction and execution of property.
According to summons by Dr Hill, Chasi was supposed to pay $250 per month for the house.
The two entered into an agreement in respect of the property at Number 37 Sturton Drive on 31 August 2004 and the agreed rent was Z$400 000, which was however, changed by virtue of an addendum to the lease to $250.
Dr Hill said Chasi was supposed to pay the rent on the first day of every month and as at 17 April this year, the money had accumulated to $1 056.01 which he said his incarcerated tenant had neglected or failed to pay.
“You are hereby summoned that you do within seven days after service of these summons upon you, enter or cause to be entered with the legal practitioners at the specified time on behalf of the plaintiff,” read part of the summons.
Dr Hill’s lawyers are Danziger and Partners.
Chasi did not respond to the summons, which were served on him in May this year.
Dr Hill has filed for a default judgment seeking cancellation of the lease agreement and Chasi’s eviction from the house.
He also seeks to evict anyone who could be claiming occupation of the property through Chasi and attachment and execution of property to recover the outstanding rentals.
Dr Hill wants Chasi to pay the outstanding money together with interests at the rate of five percent per annum.
The application for a default judgment is yet to be heard in court.
The trial of Chasi for murder and six counts of raping his 12-year-old daughter in 2008 would start from 24 to 27 September at the Bulawayo High Court.
