INSIZA North legislator, Cde Andrew Langa, yesterday condemned violence that happened recently over a gold claim in his constituency leading to the brutal murder of a man.
Qalisani Moyo, nephew to Esigodini gold baron, Mr Baron Dube was axed to death after his right foot was chopped off in a fight with a rival gang over a gold claim at HeyHill Farm.
Moyo, who was believed to be the ring leader of a group of gold panners, was killed after he was allegedly assigned by Mr Dube to wrest control of the claim from rivals. Mr Dube said he owns the disputed gold claim.
When Moyo and his group arrived at the claim, bloody clashes erupted leading to his fatal axing.
Several people including members from Moyo’s gang and the rival group sustained serious injuries.
Cde Langa called for transparency in the Ministry of Mines and Mining Development over allocation of claims saying confusion caused by some officials in the offices leads to violent clashes.
“As the legislator for the area I want to condemn in the strongest terms violence in the constituency be it political, social or in the mining sector more so when people come from other districts to harass people in my constituency,” he said.
“We want to urge officials in the Ministry of Mines to be clear on who owns which claim so that there is clarity to avoid such violence. There must not be double standards on the part of the ministry officials. The people in the constituency are not happy with what happened.”
Cde Langa said it was alarming that while mining activities were spread across the country, violence seems to be concentrated in Filabusi more than anywhere.
“In that light, I also want to discourage members of the community from taking the law into their own hands in times of conflict but rather, engage relevant authorities like the police to help bring them together for peaceful solutions,” he said.
