ZIMBABWEAN athletics legend Rabson Murombe has taken his final stride. The iconic marathon runner died in the early hours of Tuesday in Binga, reportedly in his late 80s.
According to family member and sports organiser Ronnie Siyamwamwatwa, Murombe passed away at 1AM after a long battle with illness.
Murombe blazed into the spotlight in the 1960s, dominating long-distance races and smashing racial barriers in sport. Alongside Mathias Kanda, he made history in 1964 by becoming one of the first Black athletes to represent the country at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
He was a proud member of the Wankie Athletics Club and worked for the club’s sponsors for over three decades.
The nation mourns a pioneer whose legacy still inspires generations of Zimbabwean athletes.
