Zanu PF spokesperson Cde Rugare Gumbo said the politburo unanimously agreed that the late Cde Nathan Shamuyarira should be declared a national hero after carrying out a round robin consultation process.“The decision was that he should be declared a national hero. We took into account his contribution to the liberation struggle in the then Rhodesia as the editor of the African Daily News which was popular among Africans.
“Outside the country he also supported the struggle as a member of Dare reChimurenga and when he was teaching in Tanzania he wrote several articles in support of the liberation struggle,” he said.

He said as a Foreign Affairs Minister he contributed immensely to the liberation of South Africa and Mozambique.
