Latest on holdings bays

Herald Reporter
Harare City Council says the construction of a commuter omnibus holding bay at the corner of Coventry and Rotten Row roads will be completed early next month, as all the necessary materials have been bought.
Town clerk Dr Tendai Mahachi said on Tuesday that the US$500 000 holding bay set to help de-congest the city would soon be operational as teams were now tarring the bays and putting final touches.

“Tarring of the holding bay is in progress. Once the process is through, the holding bays would be in operation. All the material for the tarring is now in place and we hope to finish in early December,” he said.

A visit by the Herald crew showed that significant progress had been made with roads being tarred and boom gates installed. The holding bay is expected to hold kombis plying the western suburbs routes and parts of the north-western suburbs. Once the new holding bay is complete, the council said it would move to address congestion at the Market Square rank. Under the new system, commuter omnibuses will drop off passengers in the city and proceed to the holding bay as part of the city’s drive to de-congest the CBD. Council will punish kombi crews who resisted the new arrangement.
