More than 120 soldiers and policemen are helping move over 20 000 domstic animals left behind by people fleeing floods in the Tokwe-Mukosi Dam basin.
The livestock, comprising mainly cattle, will be kept at four transit camps in Chivi and Masvingo districts, before being transported to Chingwizi holding camp in Nuanetsi Ranch where families are being relocated to.

Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Kudakwashe Bhasikiti today said, “The security forces on the ground will help some villagers who remained in the basin to look after their livestock.

“They have already started moving the livestock to transit camps at Gunikuni, Zunga, Kushinga and Zifunze. The livestock will be taken to Chingwizi from these areas which we feel are safe. We want to make sure that the relocated families get all their livestock.”

Minister Bhasikiti said they now had six trucks, up from two, to help with livestock translocations.

Government says it is close to completing the relocation of 2 513 families from the flood basin.

As of Wednesday, nearly 1 600 families had been relocated to Chingwizi with the remaining ones expected to be moved before the end of next week.
