Zimpapers in drive to assist flood victims

The Zimpapers Group, through its Digital Media platform, has launched a week-long charity drive running from February 15 to 22 to mobilise Zimbabweans to respond to the plight of communities affected by floods following torrential rains in some low-lying parts of the country.
The initiative is set to benefit communities affected by the Tokwi-Mukosi Dam floods which led to the breaching of the wall and has since been declared a national disaster by President Mugabe amid reports that 60 000 families were at risk.

Apart from Tokwi-Mukosi, the beneficiaries of the initiative would also be communities in Tsholotsho where floods have marooned a primary school.

The initiative comes in response to discussions on the organisation’s social networking platforms in which Zimbabweans from across the spectrum have expressed a willingness to render assistance.

Social Media Editor Delta Milayo Ndou said the initiative was inspired by online discussions which indicated that most people wanted to help but were not sure how they could.

“Following the discussions that were taking place on our various social networking platforms, we realised that many Zimbabweans are touched by the plight of the communities affected by flooding and are willing to lend a hand. This initiative is a direct response to that desire to help,” she said.

She said the organisation was co-ordinating a week-long charity drive so that well-meaning members of the public would know where they could donate supplies and how they could help those affected.

Meanwhile, the group’s chief operating officer, Mr Pikirai Deketeke, said the initiative would facilitate a collective response by Zimbabweans to assist their compatriots during this time of need.

“As an organisation we have decided to avail our offices nationwide to receive donations from well-wishers and ensure that these supplies are delivered to those who need them. Whether the donations come in the form of clothing, non-perishables or other supplies, we will ensure delivery to the intended recipients,” he said.
