Lawson to lead swimming team

Durban, South Africa today for the Top Age Group Level Three competition pencilled for this week.
The event is scheduled to start this Friday and will end on Tuesday.
The five-day competition is an inter-club tournament for South African clubs and Zimbabwe has over the years been invited to take part in the event.
The competition is targeting junior swimmers from the age of 12 and 18 years. Zimbabwe is sending eight boys and two girls.
Lawson is one of the outstanding up and coming swimmers in the country and hopes are high that he will do well in the competition.
Last year in December he took part in the Zone VI Youth Games held in Mbabane, Swaziland. He set a national record in the 100m breaststroke event during the Games and won two gold medals in the 100m breaststroke and 50m breaststroke.
Another medal hopeful is Nicholas Burnett who also set a national record in the 50m backstroke during the National Swimming Championships at Les Brown swimming complex last month. Zimbabwe Aquatic Union secretary, Mary Kloppers, said their expectation is for the individuals to get their personal best times during the competition.
“We are taking 10 swimmers of varying ages from 12 to 17 years. We had one withdrawal by Avalon Bruce because of illness.
“As Zimbabwe we are expecting the swimmers to do their personal best. Medals and everything else should come as a bonus. This is a South African inter-clubs competition and we got invited to participate.
“We have taken part in the event for so many years and last year we did quite well. We got some medals and probably we will get more this year,” said Kloppers.
