A HARARE lawyer was on Wednesday taken to court for allegedly duping his niece who wanted to buy a stand worth $10 000. Douglas Mukucha (45), a conveyancer at Hute and Partners law firm, appeared before Harare magistrate, Mr Francis Mapfumo, facing theft charges. He was remanded to September 17 on $200 bail.
The prosecutor Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa alleges that in September 2013, Choruma Estate Agents advertised a residential stand in Glenara.
Mukucha’s niece, whose name was not mentioned in State papers, responded to the advertisement and flew from South Africa to view the stand.
Mukucha advised her not to deal with the estate agent and instead offered her an alternative stand in Ruwa measuring 897 square metres.
The niece paid $3 800 to Maxwell Gwasira.
She later paid another $2 200 which was deposited into Mukucha’s CBZ bank account number 02323614560011.
Her husband later requested to reverse the deal and Gwasira gave him the $3 800 back.
The money was handed over to Mukucha.
Mukucha is alleged to have received more money which he allegedly deposited into Hute and Partners’ trust account.
The niece later learnt that nothing was deposited into the trust account.
She lost $10 000 and nothing was recovered.
